Mellanriksbana

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Mellanriksbana (in the broadest sense a railway line that runs “between the empires”) describes a railway line that crosses borders between Norway and Sweden or Sweden and Finland .

The first Mellanriksbana was the Nordvästra stambana , which was opened in 1871 from Laxå to Charlottenberg and across the border to Norway with a connection to the Kongsvingerbane . Another cross-border route was the railway line between Trondheim and Sundsvall , which consists of the Norwegian Meråkerbane and the Swedish Mittbana . There are also two other connections between Sweden and Norway, Malmbanan and Ofotbanen between Kiruna and Narvik and Dalslands Järnväg and Smaalensbanen between Halden and Mellerud . There is a Mellanriksbana between Sweden and Finland , the Boden – Haparanda railway line , which leads over the Torne älv to Tornio .

In Norway, the term Mellomriksbane is used with the same meaning.
