Melocactus levitestatus is a species of plant in the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet levitestatus refers to the smooth Samentesta, which is very typical for this species.

description

Melocactus levitestatus grows with light gray-green to dark green, depressed spherical to cylindrical shoots , which reach heights of 15 to 68 centimeters with diameters of 14 to 30 centimeters. There are nine to 15 sharp-edged ribs . The brownish-red and gray-tinged thorns are occasionally hooked on seedlings. The one to six central spines are ascending and 1.7 to 3.3 inches long. Some of them are occasionally bent downwards. The 2.2 to 3.3 centimeters long seven to ten radial spines are strongly bent back. The cephalium , which consists of bright red bristles , is up to 18 centimeters high and has a diameter of 7 to 12 centimeters.

The uniform red or red only on the outside and inside deep margentafarbenen flowers are 2 to 2.7 centimeters long and have diameters of 0.6 to 0.9 centimeters. The pure white or light pink, club-shaped fruits are 1.2 to 2.4 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Melocactus levitestatus is distributed in Brazil in the south and west of the state of Bahia and in the northern to central part of Minas Gerais .

It was first described in 1973 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining and Arnold J. Brederoo (1917–1999).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
