Melocactus pachyacanthus is a species of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet pachyacanthus means 'with thick spines'.

description

Melocactus pachyacanthus grows with green to gray-green and sometimes cucumber , depressed spherical to elongated bodies that reach heights of 15 to 30 centimeters and diameters of up to 20 centimeters. There are 9 to 11 low ribs . The strong thorns are reddish brown and tinged with gray. The 1 to 3 central spines are spread horizontally and 2.8 to 4.8 inches long. The 8 to 9 straight or slightly curved radial spines reach lengths of 2.5 to 4.9 centimeters. The cephalium , formed from cloudy pink-red bristles , is up to 12 centimeters high and has a diameter of 10 centimeters.

The more or less pink-magenta colored flowers hardly protrude from the cephalium and sometimes only partially open. They are 2.2 to 2.5 inches long and 7 to 10 millimeters in diameter. The somewhat flattened fruits are white or light pink and 1.6 to 2 inches long.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Melocactus pachyacanthus is common in the Brazilian state of Bahia .

It was first described in 1976 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining and Arnold J. Brederoo . The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Melocactus pachyacanthus subsp. pachyacanthus
  • Melocactus pachyacanthus subsp. viridis N.P. Taylor

Melocactus pachyacanthus was in the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN in 2002 as " Endangered (EN) , d". H. classified as endangered. In 2002 this also applied to the subspecies Melocactus pachyacanthus subsp. pachyacanthus . Melocactus pachyacanthus subsp. viridis , on the other hand, was considered " Critically Endangered (CR) ". H. threatened with extinction. In the 2010 update, the subspecies were not reassessed and removed from the red list. In 2013 the species was classified as " Vulnerable (VU) ", i. H. endangered.
