Melocactus zehntneri is a species of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet zehntneri honors the Swiss biologist Leo Zehntner (1864–1961).

description

Melocactus zehntneri grows with different green tinted, often blue , hemispherical to cylindrical, very variable in shape shoots that reach heights of 11 to 48 centimeters with diameters of 9 to 25 centimeters. There are ten to 22 sharp-edged ribs . The yellow, brown or reddish thorns are drowned out gray with the exception of the tip. Some are hooked on seedlings. The up to four upwardly curved central spines, which can also be missing, are 1.5 to 4.5 centimeters long. The 1.9 to 4.5 centimeters long seven to eleven radial spines are slightly to strongly bent back. The lowest of them are the longest. The cephalium , which consists of sparse to plentiful white to creamy white wool and dense, fine, light pink-red bristles , is up to 11 centimeters or more high and has a diameter of 6 to 10 centimeters.

The light to deep pink flowers are up to 2.5 centimeters long and 0.4 to 1.3 centimeters in diameter. They do not protrude from the cephalium. The light to deep lilac pink fruits are 1.2 to 2 centimeters long.

Melocactus zehntneri is very widespread in the Brazilian states of Piauí , Ceará , Rio Grande do Norte , Paraíba , Pernambuco , Alagoas and Bahia .

It was first described as Cactus zehntneri in 1922 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . Philipp von Luetzelburg placed the species in the genus Melocactus in 1923 .

Melocactus douradaensis is now listed as a subspecies of Melocactus zehntneri :
