Melpomene (ship)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Melpomene is a 1895 in Boitzenburg for Lägerdorf built Schiffer Claus Lemburg Besanewer , also known as Christina and owl went.

history

The mizzen was built as Melpomene at E. Nobody's shipyard . It has an overall length of 19.55 m, a width of 4.07 m and a draft of 1.15 m. The sail area is 115 square meters.

In 1909 the son Johannes Lemburg bought the Melpomene from his father and in 1926 Johannes Wicht bought the ship with its new home port Wilster. From 1929 Wicht had a 12 HP hot- head engine installed and the mizzen was dismantled. On the first voyage with the new engine, the skipper fell overboard and drowned. The widow Maria geb. Bösch married the skipper Emil Hasch, who then continued to run the Melpomene.

In autumn 1939 the Ewer ran aground in front of the estuary and was full of water. It was pumped empty by the Wewelsfleth fire brigade and made afloat again.

During the Second World War , the skipper was drafted and the Melpomene was shut down until 1947. When her husband returned from the war seriously ill, Ms. Miede obtained the helmsman's license in Brunsbüttel for small coastal shipping . She drove the ship as a skipper until 1960 and it served as Christina to the miller H. Martens of the Rumflether mill "Aurora" from Wilster for the transport of feed. In 1976, Bernd Schmiel bought the ship and built it back into the mizzenewer, which he then called the "Eule". The Ewer has been sailing again since 1984.

Non-profit foundation Quaker houses

In 2007 (according to another source in 2010) the 31 t mizzen sailor with flat bottom was sold to the non-profit foundation Quäkerhäuser für Soziale Arbeit in Buchholz in der Nordheide , which, with the support of the economic development agency of the district of Harburg (WLH), manages the Ewer as an employment project for young people without Apprenticeship restored. Under the professional guidance of the shipyard owner Christian Eckhoff in Hoopte, the sailing ship Melpomene was repaired and overhauled at the August Eckhoff shipyard . Among other things, it received new masts in order to get it back on track for youth camps after completion in 2014 with the home port of Stöckte.

Association for the promotion of traditional seafaring and seamanship

From 2014 the Melpomene was founded by the Association for the Promotion of Traditional Seafaring and Seamanship e. V. and kept in motion by crew members of other larger traditional sailors such as Thor Heyerdahl , Nobile and Fridtjof Nansen . As part of the collaboration with Thor Heyerdahl e. V. there is a demanding training and further education program. The traditional knowledge and the current seamanship is passed on. In addition to traditional handicrafts and seamanship, it extends in particular to experiential education from the sea in storms and waves. The Melpomene serves as originally planned as the institution and the ship under way.

It is one of the last of these ships of this time and belongs to the maritime heritage of the Hamburg metropolitan region. Today it is equipped with a Deutz-Diesel SA 4M 517 engine, the galley has a gas stove with 4 burners and there is also an 80 liter boiler, toilet and shower, 900 liter waste water tank and a 1000 liter drinking water tank. 12 berths offer enough sleeping space and in the mess there is a large table for 12 people.
