Mena traffic jam

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mena-Stau (Spanish: Tranque Mena ) was a reservoir on the outskirts of Valparaíso in Chile. The dam was an earth dam 17 m high and 200 m long. It was bought by a private person named Nicolás Mena for his own water supply, u. a. for a brewery. The reservoir had a storage capacity of 100,000 cubic meters and was located at a height of 270 meters above sea level.

On August 11, 1888, the dam broke and sent a tidal wave of water, mud and stones into the city, killing around 100 people, according to various sources. In the literature, structural failure is given as the reason for failure. The reservoir was between the hills (Cerros) of San Juan de Dios and Yungay. The masses of water rolled through the streets of Yungay, Bellavista and Condell.
