The institute is located as a branch of the University in Lednice (formerly: Eisgrub ) and in the Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape , now a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

history

The Mendeleum is historically closely linked to the Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape. It was founded in 1912. Involved were Erich von Tschermak , then a professor at the Vienna University of Agricultural Sciences , and Wilhelm Lauche also a lecturer at the university and director courtyard of the Prince of Liechtenstein and head of the Higher Horticultural School Eisgrub . The project was supported by the Imperial and Royal Agriculture Ministry for Cisleithanien and Prince Johann II of Liechtenstein . The prince made the operating areas available in his rule Eisgrub and took over part of the operating costs.

After the First World War , the Mendeleum was affiliated with the Higher Fruit and Horticultural School . After the Second World War , there were several reorganizations. Ultimately, the Mendeleum , like the Higher Fruit and Horticultural School , became part of the Mendel University in Brno .

tasks

The aim of the research institute was and is plant breeding and refinement as well as genetics today .

Administration building

The administrative building of the Mendeleum was built in 1912 according to a design by Clemens Kattner , who had built the Protestant church in neighboring Lundenburg the year before . The building shows early forms of modernism and almost completely dispenses with historical decor. Inside, the rooms are grouped around a large, two-story hall with a staircase and symmetrically arranged walkways.
