Menhir from Bourg-Jardin

The menhir of Bourg-Jardin (also called Menhir le Roi, Roi des Menhirs, Menhir du Camp de César) is located in Avrillé in the Vendée department in France, accessible from Rue Georges Clemenceau.

The 7.2 m high and about 85 tons heavy menhir stands in a garden behind the town hall. He was smoothed out on all sides by the forces of nature and human hands. After a few examples in Brittany ( menhir from Kerloas , menhir from Champ Dolent , menhir from Saint-Uzec ) it is one of the largest menhirs in France. In 1889 it was recognized as a Monument historique . The menhir is the only survivor of three stones that stood here until the 20th century. The "Alignment de la Pierre" (also Alignement de La Petite Pierre) is about 850 m to the west. The Alignements du Bois du Fourgon are located near the Chateau de la Guignardière.
