The menhir of Morl is a menhir near Morl , a district of Petersberg (Saalekreis) in Saxony-Anhalt .

Location and description

The menhir is located about 2 km southwest of Morl and about 1 km north of the Saale on an elevated terrain. It originally stood on the old salt road between Halle (Saale) and Wettin . Several stones are said to have originally stood on this road, including some nail stones . The terrain belonged temporarily to a military training area of the NVA . When it was disbanded in 1997, the stone was almost removed. But it was finally set up again 25 m southeast of its original location. There are several burial mounds in the vicinity : 1.7 km southeast of the only surviving of the original five burial mounds of Morl and 1.9 km southwest of the two burial mounds of Brachwitz . Another menhir is located 3 km to the southwest: The Stone Jungfrau in Dölau .

The menhir consists of lignite quartzite and has partly turned black due to weathering. It has a height of 140 cm, a width of 92 cm and a depth of 42 cm. It is plate-shaped and slopes upwards.
