The menhir of Ortenberg (also called Pipelistein , Bibelistein or Bibilisstein ) is a prehistoric menhir near Ortenberg in the Ortenau district in Baden-Württemberg .

Location and find history

The stone is located east of Ortenberg Castle in the vineyards. It originally stood on the ridge, but was moved a few meters in 1875 during road construction work. About 5 km to the north are the menhir of Rammersweier and the menhir of Bohlsbach .

description

The menhir is made of red granite . It is approximately pyramidal and tapers upwards. Processing traces are not recognizable. The stone has a height of 168 cm, a width of 78 cm and a thickness of 59 cm.

Neolithic artifacts, including an ax, have been found about 200–300 m from the menhir .

In earlier times there was a custom that two to three year old boys had to hit their heads against the stone, “then Bibeli will come out”.
