The menhir of São Bartolomeu do Mar was only discovered for archaeological science in 1980. Since prehistoric times it has stood behind a wall next to the parish church of the town of Mar , which is on the coastal road (N 13) between Póvoa de Varzim and Viana do Castelo near Esposende in northern Portugal . It is one of the rare menhirs north of the Duero .

The menhir protrudes about 2.1 m from the ground. Its slender tip is chipped off, which leads to speculation about an anthropomorphic shape. It has a trapezoidal cross-section at the bottom and an approximately triangular cross-section at the top. All three sides have bowls . Consisting of granite existing stone is loud "Geological map" on an old beach terrace. There are no indications of its dating.
