The menhir of Sippersfeld (also known as Babenstein or Pappernstein ) is a menhir near Sippersfeld in the Donnersbergkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate .

Location and description

The menhir is located west of Sippersfeld on a field below the highest point of an elevation. A road passes about 20 m to the north. 250 m to the south-west there is a burial mound field from the younger Hallstatt period , 1.6 km to the north-west of the Lange Stein von Gonbach .

The menhir is made of red sandstone . It has a height of 50 cm, a width of 40 cm and a depth of 36 cm. It is shaped like a cuboid and has three parallel grooves on one side. The stone is only the stump of a former menhir. Due to its shape, it was sometimes viewed as a medieval or modern object. However, it cannot be a boundary stone , as there was never a boundary at this point. It is too thick for the base of an atonement cross ; at most, it would be possible to enlarge the shaft for a devotional cross or a wayside shrine .

The menhir in regional sagas

Both names of the stone go back to a legend: According to this, depending on the variant, it should be a memorial stone for the last knight of Babenstein or for a general or count of Pappernheim who was killed at this point in the battle. However, no noble family from the Palatinate is known that bore one of these names.
