Grande and Petite Pierre

The three menhirs of Maupertus-sur-Mer are to the west of Maupertus-sur-Mer and Cherbourg-Maupertus airport and in the village near Cherbourg in the Manche department in Normandy in France .

The “Grande and Petite Pierre” of Maupertus-sur-Mer are on the D611 road west of the airport. Originally, the two menhirs were part of a tumulus that was removed during the Second World War to make way for the airfield. In 1997 the stones near the road were put up again.

La Grande Pierre ( 49 ° 39 ′ 18 ″  N , 1 ° 29 ′ 20.3 ″  W ) is about 4.0 meters high and about 2.0 meters wide at the base. It tapers towards the tip. La Petite Pierre ( 49 ° 39 ′ 18.2 ″  N , 1 ° 29 ′ 20.2 ″  W ) is rectangular and is 2.5 to 3 meters high with what looks like its tip has broken off.

La Grande Pierre has been protected as a Monument historique since 1889 .

In Maupertus-sur-Mer on the street “Hameau de Haut” there is a slender, heavily weathered granite menhir over 2.5 m high , which is used as a kind of goal post, but is not registered ( 49 ° 39 ′ 25.2 ″  N , 1 ° 28 ′ 56.4 ″  W ).
