Merak is a place in the Indian Union Territory of Ladakh .

Location and inhabitants

The place is east of Leh . Merak is located directly on the Pangong Tso at an altitude of 4238 m and can be reached from Leh via the Chang La mountain pass (5360 m above sea level). The inhabitants live from agriculture and in the short summer from tourism.

history

It has only been possible for tourists to visit the villages of Spangmik , Man and Merak since 2010 . You still need a permit (Inner Line Permit), which you can get in Leh without any problems. An onward journey to Chushul , near the Line of Actual Control , the border between India and China that has not been definitively established, is only possible for Indians.

Due to its good location, Merak was earmarked for the construction of the largest solar telescope in the world.
