The Mercator type , also known as the Varnemunde series for export , is a semi-container ship type from the Warnow shipyard .

history

The cargo ship series was manufactured from 1972 to 1977 in 21 units by VEB Warnowwerft in Warnemünde . The ships were intended primarily for the combined transport of heavy cargo, general cargo, pallets and containers as well as refrigerated cargo and sweet oil.

The type ship of the series was Варнемюнде (Cyrillic for Warnemünde ), which was handed over to the Soviet Baltic Shipping Co. in Leningrad on December 23, 1972 with hull number 331 . It was renamed Diana B. in 1996 and canceled in Alang on April 10, 1997 . Of the 21 ships built, 17 were delivered to the Soviet Union , the last four units were built for the German shipping company . These were the Nordhausen , Mühlhausen , Sangerhausen and the last ship in the series, the Sondershausen , which, after being delivered on March 18, 1977, served DSR until 1993 and was canceled in Alang on June 1, 2000.

technology

The ships were propelled by a 8240 kW two-stroke diesel engine of the type K8Z 70/120 E manufactured under MAN license from the manufacturer VEB Dieselmotorenwerk Rostock , which acts directly on a fixed propeller. The machine system is set up for 16-hour guard-free operation.

The hulls with a bulbous bow and transom are assembled in a sectional construction.

The four cargo holds of the same length with a volume of 18,233 m 3 grain space and 17,037 m 3 ball space have tween decks and hydraulic folding hatch covers split amidships on deck and in the hold.

368 containers can be transported. The loading gear consists of four 8-tonne loading booms , three 8-tonne loading cranes, a 3.2-tonne crane and a swing-through 60-tonne heavy-lift boom .
