Mercedes is a city in the center of the province of Corrientes in Argentina with about 33,500 inhabitants (as of INDEC 2010). It is the capital of the Mercedes department of the same name .

location

Mercedes is 700 km from the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . The place is about 100 km from the Brazilian border. The distance to Corrientes in north-northwest direction is approximately 200 km. It is 40 km to the north to the southern banks of the protected and marshland area Esteros del Iberá . Near the city is Itá Pucú , a natural stone monument.

history

The city was officially founded in 1832 on behalf of Governor Pedro Ferré. Originally the place was called Paí Ubre (from the Guaraní ). In 1835 it was renamed Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes .
