Mercedes "Mercy" Viana Schlapp (born December 15, 1972 in the United States ) is a Cuban-American journalist , columnist and political advisor . Since September 2017, she has succeeded Hope Hicks as Director of Strategic Communication in the Executive Office of US President Donald Trump . Before that, she worked in various positions for Republican Party politicians , including on the campaign team of former US President George W. Bush. In the Bush administration, she served as the Director of Specialty Media in the White House . There she met her husband Matt Schlapp .

In addition to her political activities, she appeared regularly as a commentator for major US TV stations, in particular for Fox News , which is related to the Republican Party .
