Mercenary is a melodic death metal band founded in Denmark in 1991 .

Band history

Mercenary started as a four-man project in the early 1990s. After Mercenary produced the first two albums ( First Breath and Everblack ) with the Danish label Serious Entertainment , they were able to sign a contract with Century Media for the third and so far most successful album 11 Dreams .

After the songwriter and bassist Kral had sung all the songs on the First Breath himself and this was too exhausting for him, the brothers Mikkel and Morten Sandager could be won over for the album Everblack .

By appearing at the “Prog Power” festival, Mercenary was able to significantly increase its profile in the USA . After the recording of the album Everblack it became obvious that drummer Rasmus Jacobsen invested too little time in Mercenary and more in other projects. Guitarist Signar Petersen also left the band for personal reasons. As a replacement for Rasmus Jacobsen came Mike Park, whom Kral had known since 1993. Then at a concert in Copenhagen they planned to work together. Martin Buus Pedersen had also been known to Kral for a long time. He met him when he was 17 while auditioning at a music store where he worked. He asked for his phone number and was able to win him over to the band three years later.

The third album 11 Dreams found international recognition, and after a few European support appearances by Evergrey and solo appearances, Mercenary toured in spring 2005 with "At Vance" as the support band of Brainstorm , who did their first headlining tour.

At the end of March 2006 the band announced the departure of bassist Henrik "Kral" Andersen for personal reasons. On April 7, 2006, the band finished recording the album The Hours that Remain , which was recorded in Jacob Hansen's studio. The album was released on August 18, 2006 on Century Media Records. At the Danish Metal Awards the album was named "Album of the Year".

At the Sägfestival, Mercenary played for the first time with the new bassist and singer René Pedersen. In addition, Soul Decision , a song from the new album, was played live for the first time.

On November 11th 2009 the separation of Mike Park (drums), Mikkel (clear vocals) and Morten (keyboard, vocals) Sandager was announced. Musical differences were given as the reason for the separation. Despite the separation, a new album and a tour have been announced for spring 2010. The withdrawn members have already announced new projects; their positions at Mercenary will soon be filled.

The band released their seventh studio album Through Our Darkest Days on July 26, 2013 via NoiseArt Records . Since the tour of the same name, Peter Mathiesen has also been a new man on the drums.

After almost 7 years of musical absence, they will release their new single From the Ashes of the Fallen on March 20, 2020 on Spotify .
