Metamorphosis -

Metamorphosis is the sixth studio album by the Danish melodic death metal band Mercenary . It was released on February 25, 2011 by NoiseArt Records .

Emergence

The album was created under difficult circumstances. When the musicians gathered the first ideas for new songs, it turned out that the band members wanted to develop the music in different directions. As a result, the drummer Mike Park Nielsen and the Sandager brothers Mikkel ( vocals ) and Morten ( keyboards ) left the group in November 2009 . Morten Løwe Sørensen took over the role of drums and played in the bands The Arcane Order and Submission . Bass player René Pedersen took over the vocals .

In spring and summer 2010, the musicians revised the existing song material. Harder songs like “Through the Eyes of the Devil” and “On the Edge of Sanity” gave the direction for the other songs. The recordings took place in the Hansen Studios in the Danish city of Ribe . Produced and mixed was Metamorphosis by Jacob Hansen . All keyboards were recorded by Kim Olesen from the band Anubis Gate . According to René Pedersen, the album title should represent the new beginning of the band. This process is represented on the album cover by the phoenix bird .

reception

Metamorphosis received mostly positive reviews from the specialist press. Uwe “Buffo” Schnädelbach from Rock Hard magazine wrote in his review that “when it comes to songwriting, the band has almost perfectly managed the balancing act between demands and commerce, heaviness and melody”. Mercenary are “undoubtedly the better In Flames ”, for which Schnädelbach awarded nine out of ten points. For the reviewer Eckardt of the online magazine metal.de , Metamorphosis is a “convincing performance as a quartet, strong songs, and all of this packaged in a powerful, modern sound”. He awarded eight out of ten points.

Thomas Meyns from the online magazine Metalnews was negative . He criticized the fact that the album “seems well constructed from start to finish” and that the “hand-held radio suitability robs the songs of sustainability”. Meyns awarded 4.5 out of seven points. Sebastian Kessler from Metal Hammer magazine complained that "after the first two strong songs, more and more trivialities creep in" and that the album "runs out of air for the entire season". Kessler awarded four out of seven points.
