history

The building is first mentioned in 1283. In 1454 it became the city refuge of the St. Marien monastery outside Trier , hence the name "Mergener Hof" (Marien = Mergen). During the secularization under Napoleon , the farm complex came into private ownership.

Jesuit youth center

The Jesuits had founded a Marian Congregation (MC) in Trier in 1576 with the aim of giving boys a Christian character through religious exercises as they grew up. In 1617 a craftsmen's cooperative (" sodality ") branched out from the congregation because of the growing number of members . The MJC survived the repeal of the Jesuit order in 1773 and its renewed ban in the Kulturkampf under Bismarck , despite many difficulties. In 1919 a Jesuit branch was established in Trier. In 1930 the Mergener Hof was acquired by the Jesuits as a youth center, but in 1937 it was forcibly passed into state ownership in connection with the dissolution and confiscation of the association's assets under the National Socialists in 1937.

After the war, the building was mainly used by the diocese of Trier until the Jesuits with various groups filled the house again in the 1960s. Due to the strong increase in membership renovation and expansion measures were decided after graduating in 1969 with the inauguration of Mergener court as a youth center and "open house" in order to co-education extended and open offers concept within the child and youth work , even corresponding spatial possibilities offered.

Todays use

During a period of reconstruction in the post-war period, the sport was integrated until the club was re-established in 1953. In the 1960s, the concept was expanded to include open work and the inclusion of girls in youth work, as it still exists today. In 1971 the club name was changed to “Mergener Hof e. V. (MJC from 1617) to Trier ”. In 1976, the Mergener Hof's offer was enriched with the establishment of a counseling center for young unemployed people. This facility has been located in the youth center building since spring 2007. After 375 years, the Jesuits left active youth work in 1992.

Nowadays the youth center consists of the areas of sport, youth association ( J-GCL ), youth counseling center, school offers (orientation and project days) and open area (care offers, help with homework, cultural events and holiday offers).

Youth associations

The tradition of the Marian Youth Congregation continues to this day in the youth associations at the Mergener Hof. There is still a boys and men association under the name, MJC / GCL-JM at the Mergener Hof, as well as a girls and women association under the name MJC / GCL-MF. In the youth associations at Mergener Hof (MJC / J-GCL) young people and young adults come together. They learn to live in a reflected manner in togetherness, community and their personal beliefs and to take responsibility for themselves and others. Together and with a gender split, one stands up for justice and for the design of school, church and society as a whole. The associations are members of the Federation of German Catholic Youth (BDKJ).
