Merimeri Penfold

Merimeri Penfold CNZM (* as Merimeri Roberts on May 26, 1921 in Te Hapua , New Zealand ; † April 1, 2014 ) was a New Zealand linguist.

Merimeri Penfold taught Maori for over 30 years at the University of Auckland , from which she was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1999. In 2001 she was awarded the Commander's Cross of the New Zealand Order of Merit by Elizabeth II for her commitment to Māori culture .

Penfold was New Zealand's Human Rights Commissioner from 2002 to 2007 . After leaving office, she donated the Te Kāhui Tika Tangata (robe) to the office.
