The silver pike ( Merluccius bilinearis ), also known as the North American hake , is a species of the hake (Merlucciidae) that is native to the northwestern Atlantic .
features
The fish becomes 70 to 80 centimeters long and weighs around 2.5 kilograms. The fish are silver, with the back a little more brown and the belly lighter and whitish. The pectoral fins are long and usually reach the base of the anal fin or a little beyond. The fish's head is quite large. The two-part dorsal fin has 47 to 54 fin rays. The anal fin consists of 37 to 41 fin rays.
distribution
This fish is found along the North American east coast, from the Belle Isle Strait in the north to the Bahamas in the south. This species is most common between southern Newfoundland and South Carolina .
Way of life
They live in shallow waters and mostly stay on sandy bottom. Specimens over 40 centimeters in length hunt other fish, such as small herrings, but also crustaceans or squids. One can observe cannibalistic behavior, among other things. The fish live at a depth of 55 to 900 meters. Spawning takes place in the mid-Atlantic from June to July. Spawning seems to be strongly influenced by the water temperature, there are annual variations in the course of the spawning season. This affects the growth of the population.
Systematics
Merluccius bilinearis is one of 15 species of the genus Merluccius within the hake (Merlucciidae).
