Mersing is a city (and the name of the surrounding district) in the northeast of the Malaysian state of Johor on the South China Sea .

Mersing is 136 kilometers northeast of Johor Bahru , the state's capital. It can be reached by buses from Kota Tinggi , Johor Bahru or directly from Singapore .

The city has about 28,000 inhabitants and is originally a fishing village. Its port in the delta of the Mersing River is the starting point for numerous ferries to the islands of the Seribuat Archipelago or Tioman and is therefore frequented by Malaysian and foreign tourists, especially on weekends. It also offers a few places to stay and many restaurants. Only the 95-year-old Taoist and Buddhist Fushun Temple is worth mentioning for tourists in the city itself .

The district hospital is also located in Mersing.
