The Ichthyosporea or Mesomycetozoea are a taxon of unicellular organisms within the Holozoa . They often live parasitically on aquatic life.

features

The unicellular ichthyosporea are morphologically characterized by cells that have, if at all, only a single cilium ; some species only have an elongated amoeboid shape. Most of the cristae are flat, but some species have tubular cristae.

Way of life

Many species live parasitically, e.g. as parasites of fish, crustaceans, insects and others. So types of Dermocystidium are parasites on the skin or in the gills of various fish, frogs and newts. Psorospermium haeckeli occurs in crayfish . Ichthyophonus hoferi can cause severe and economically significant fish deaths. Some species (e.g. Sphaeroforma ) live free-swimming and use dead organic matter for food.

Systematics

The group was first described in 1998 by Thomas Cavalier-Smith , a common synonym is Mesomycetozoea. The name Ichthyosporea refers to the common fish parasites in this group (Greek Ichthyo, fish). The group contains numerous monotypic genera, currently the following taxa are included in the group:
