The measuring place , alternatively written measuring place , is an event area in the Karlsruhe east city . The Karlsruher Mess', a fair , has been taking place on the square since 1912 .

The market office of the city of Karlsruhe is responsible for events on the measuring site. In the periods between events, the measuring station is available as a parking lot with around 500 parking spaces . On some days with a particularly high volume of traffic, such as on Saturdays in Advent , the measuring point is made available as a free Park & Ride car park in conjunction with a free ticket for the onward journey by tram into the city.

At the measuring station there are walls on which graffiti can legally be applied.

location

The measuring station has a trapezoidal surface. In the north, the Durlacher Allee borders the measuring site, and the Landgraben also runs underground here . In the east, the space is limited by the east ring . To the south of the measuring site is part of the Otto Dullenkopf Park, to the west of the old slaughterhouse . In the southern section, part of the Alter Schlachthof street runs across the square.

The next tram stop is Tullastraße , the next parking lot is on Gottesauer Platz.

history

The area of today's measuring site is in the vicinity of Gottesaue Castle , the site of which has been in use since 1094. First there was a monastery and from the end of the 16th century a castle. From 1818 the facility was used as a barracks.

In 1886 a gasworks , Gasversorgungswerk II, also called Gaswerk Ost, was opened, southwest of today's measurement site. In 1887 the slaughterhouse was relocated to the west of today's measuring site. From 1889, the city administration had the city residents' household waste deposited south of the gas works. The hill that was created in this way was later used for the filling of today's measuring site.

After the traditional Karlsruhe Mess' took place with interruptions at different locations since 1717, it took place for the first time in 1912 at the so-called New Messplatz Karlsruhe . The square was chosen as the future measuring site due to its favorable location along the Rheinhafen-Durlach and Hauptbahnhof-Schlachthof tram lines. After the citizens' committee approved the relocation of the fair on July 14, 1912, a number of necessary construction measures were carried out, including the relocation of a hall for measuring booths that had only been built 9 years earlier at the previous location. The first Herbstmess' at the Messplatz consisted of an amusement park with 26 showmen and a sales fair with 29 shops and immediately achieved a new revenue record. At that time, the two masses began on the first Sunday in June and November respectively and lasted nine days; from 1921 onwards they began on Saturday and lasted ten days.

During the Second World War , the Herbstmess' 1939 was canceled due to its proximity to the front in France. Between 1940 and 1943 the mess' was relocated to the city center due to acute danger from aerial bombs and the neighboring gas works. From 1943 onwards, trade fair operations were completely shut down, and it wasn't until 1946 that the Mess' returned to the measuring station.

From 1954 to 1997, the Oststadthalle was located on the Messplatz as an event hall with space for up to 5000 people. In 1979 the measuring station was attached.

After the neighboring gasworks expanded in 1915, but was badly damaged in World War II, it continued to operate into the 1960s. In 1965, operations ceased and the building began to be demolished. In 2006, operations in the neighboring slaughterhouse ceased and the Alter Schlachthof creative park has been under construction there ever since .

During the Covid-19 pandemic, a drive -in cinema was operated at the measuring station.

Events

The spring and autumn masses take place annually on the measuring site, annual markets with around 100 rides , snacks and a marquee. The spring fair always takes place at the end of May or the beginning of June, the autumn fair at the end of October or the beginning of November. Another festival that has been held annually since 2013 is the Karlsruhe Oktoberfest.

In addition, other events such as large flea markets and circus performances take place regularly.
