from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Metacomet Monadnock Trail (English Metacomet Monadnock Trail , often abbreviated MM or MM ) is a 183 km (114 mile) long distance hiking trail in the states of Massachusetts and New Hampshire in the United States. The trail runs north-south and crosses several state parks .

The path takes its name from its endpoints. On the border of the states of Massachusetts and Connecticut , the path leads to the beginning of Metacomet -Wanderwegs ( Metacomet Trail ), which runs through Connecticut. Metacomet was a famous sachem in the 17th century who led the King Philip's War against the colonists. The geological formation of the Metacomet Ridge , on which part of the hiking trail runs, was named after him. In the north, the hiking trail extends to Mount Monadnock , an island mountain . The word Monadnock comes from the Abenaki language and is the name for this "single mountain" in southern New Hampshire. In English usage, Monadnock also became a synonym for Inselberg .

The Metacomet Monadnock hiking trail is maintained by the Appalachian Mountain Club . About half of the trail runs over private land.
