Metanoia was an Australian Christian death metal band from Townsville that was formed in 1990 and disbanded in 2000.

history

The band was formed in 1990. At first the line-up changed several times to include the couple Lisa "Spud" (electric bass) and Steve "Yak" Bennett (electric guitar). The band got its name from the Greek version of the New Testament and describes the Greek word for "repentance". The first demo appeared in the same year . In 1994, under the name Screaming Fetus , another demo followed, which contains six songs. Finally, in 1995, permanent members were found with the drummer Dylan Speerstra and the singer Justin "Yowie" Smith. In the same year another demo was released, which was titled Akeldema . Then the label Rowe Productions became aware of the group, which they took for the release of three albums under contract. After the first four songs were contributed to the label sampler Raise the Dead , the debut album In Darkness or in Light was recorded in St. Andrews Studio in Melbourne with Steve Rowe from Mortification as producer and released that same year. After the release, Speerstra was replaced by Ian Northey, whose position again later took Ian Waller. As the second guitarist Michael Politanski was briefly in the band. In 1998 and 1999 Rowe Productions also released the two albums Don't Walk Dead and Time to Die . On the latter album, Simon Pankhurst can be heard as the new singer. In 2000 the band split up.

style

According to Brian Fischer-Giffin in the Encyclopedia of Australian Heavy Metal , the band plays Christian death metal. The music on the first album was heavily influenced by heavy Thrash Metal of the late 1980s, with the vocals sounding guttural and "distorted". After that, however, the style matured noticeably. The group combines many extreme styles and is a strong representative on the Christian Metal market. Mark Allan Powell wrote in his Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music that the band initially played Thrash Metal and then Mortification induced them to use Death Metal vocals. The debut album contains a song called Enslavement , which deals with the subject of masturbation and describes this as immoral and addictive. The title song is an acoustic ballad that uses growling . The second album is more extreme than its predecessor. The song Now Listen Up from the third album own a radio - Groove which to tourniquet or Pantera remember. The album contains more classic metal songs than its predecessors. Paradise is an ironic message about the hometown of the Bennetts, which according to the band has one of the world's highest youth suicide rates. According to Steve Bennett, the group is trying to be a metal band, but they don't want to be classified in any particular category.
