Metaphire longa (original combination Perichaeta longa , frequent synonym Pheretima longa ) is a type of little bristle from the family of Megascolecidae (giantearthworms) in the order of Crassiclitellata (earthworms in the broader sense), which is particularlywidespreadon the islands of Jawa and Sumatera Length of 37 cm reached.

features

The cylindrical, elongated body Metaphire longa is about 37 cm long and 1 cm thick, with adult animals having around 132 ring-shaped segments. As generally in the genus Metaphire , the ring-shaped clitellum comprises three segments from the 14th to the 16th segment. From the furrow between the 13th and 14th segment, there is a dorsal pore at the rear edge of each furrow up to the penultimate one. Around the individual segments, with the exception of those of the clitellum, there is a ring with numerous bristles , 60 on the 20th segment , which is significantly fewer than in the very similar type Metaphire musica . In addition, Metaphire longa is smaller and paler in color than Metaphire musica .

The segment partitions 4/5, 5/6, 6/7, 11/12, 12/13 and 13/14 are thickened, 7/8 is thin, while 8/9 and 9/10 are completely missing.

In the 8th, 9th and 10th segment there is a gizzard . At the beginning of the 15th segment, the narrow esophagus merges into the wide midgut, on which there is a pair of simple, long blind sacs in the 26th segment, both of which extend forward to the 23rd segment. The closed blood vessel system has a pair of lateral hearts in the 11th, 12th and 13th segments .

On the ventral side of the hermaphrodite on the 14th segment between the bristles is a single female genital opening in the middle and on the 18th segment in the middle of two circular, glandular courtyards a pair of hole-shaped (and not slit-shaped as in Metaphire musica ) male genital openings with a notched edge, between which have around 16 bristles. The two large, grape-like prostate glands extend from the 17th to the 19th segment and open outwards, muscular ducts in the 18th segment. The bundle-like ovaries are suspended as a pair in the 14th segment on the back of the 13th septum. In the 8th and 9th segment there are two pairs of receptacula seminis , which consist of a large ampoule and a long, coiled tube and open outwards in the folds between the 7th and 8th segment and the 8th and 9th segment.

Distribution, habitat and way of life

Metaphire longa is native to mountain forests in the west of the Indonesian island of Jawa and on Sumatera and feeds on decaying plant material.

The Metaphire musica, which is native to the central and eastern Jawa and Flores, is a very similar species, which, like Metaphire longa , is also known as cacing sonari in Indonesian .
