Metarhizium anisopliae , formerly known as Entomophthora anisopliae called, is a globally widespread, soil-inhabiting fungus that to the order of crustal ball mushroom-like part (Hypocreales) multiplies asexually and as a parasite infects many species of insects. Metarhizit anisopliae leads to death in more than 200 insect species. The name goes back to the zoologist Ilja Iljitsch Metschnikow and refers to the beetle Anisoplia austriaca .

When the mitospores ( conidia ) of the fungus come into contact with the body of a host insect, they germinate and the hyphae penetrate the exoskeleton. The fungus then develops inside the insect, which leads to its death after a few days. The cuticle of the dead host often turns red; if the humidity is high enough, a white coating develops on the carcass, which turns green as soon as spores are produced. Because of the green color of the spores, the fungal disease is known as green muscardine .

Metarhikum anisopliae is used as an insecticide , for example to control termites or fringed winged birds .
