Methaemalbumin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Methaemalbumin is an albumin complex that consists of albumin and hematin (oxidized heme ).

The complex gives the blood plasma its brown color and occurs in hemolytic and hemorrhagic disorders.

Its plasma occurrence is used to distinguish between hemorrhagic and edematous pancreatitis .

The Schumm test is used to distinguish intravascular hemolysis from extravascular hemolysis , such as hemolytic anemia . A positive result is an indicator of intravascular hemolysis.
