Methanol production from flue gas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The production of methanol from flue gas should take place in a pilot plant in Lünen .

description

In a pilot plant , engineers extract methanol from the flue gas from the coal-fired power plant, which has previously escaped into the atmosphere through the chimney . With the help of excess regenerative energy from wind and sun, the CO 2 from the flue gas from 2017 is converted into fuel .

Around one ton of methanol is produced every day in a pilot plant in Lünen

The CO 2 is washed out of the flue gas and synthesized with hydrogen to form methanol. The hydrogen, the second component for producing the fuel, is supplied by an electrolyser , which is preferably fed with excess wind and solar power. Depending on the workload, the Lünen plant can produce around 400 t of methanol per year.

Up to around ten percent of methanol can be added to gasoline or diesel , similar to ethanol, a close relative of methanol. In further stages, methanol from Lünen can also be converted into gasoline, diesel or the aviation engine fuel kerosene . The electrolyser was supplied by the Canadian company Hydrogenics. It has an electrical output of 1000 kW.

The heart of the plant, which extracts methanol from hydrogen and carbon dioxide using a catalyst , comes from Iceland. The local company Carbon Recycling International has developed the technology and has already tested it in several plants on the island. The facility in Lünen was built as part of the Horizon 2020 research program , cost eleven million euros and is 80 percent financed by the European Union .

Update

Quote: "In the past, STEAG made its Lünen site available for an EU-funded research project in order to study methanol production, ie the subject of power-to-liquid. As a result of the energy transition, this project could not be carried out in the planned form Due to the energy transition and the planned shutdown of power plant sites as a result, the amount of CO2 required for the synthesis of the fuel, i.e. the methanol, could no longer be made available locations of the company the subject of power-to-liquid or power-to-Fuel in connection with the issue of CO 2 low-carbon district heating from coal or gas power plants closer to investigate "-Zitatende.
