The Donetsk metro ( Ukrainian Донецький метрополітен Donezkyj Metropoliten , Russian Донецкий метрополитен Donetsky Metropoliten ) is an unfinished construction project for a subway in the fifth largest city in Ukraine . In the near future, a line with six stations should be used, in the distant future Donetsk is to receive a network of three lines.

At the beginning of the 1980s, Donetsk's population exceeded the million mark, entitling the city to build its own metro system, as was common in the USSR at the time. The first plans for a secant network with three lines modeled on other Soviet metro networks first came to the public in 1984 . However, the implementation of this has been delayed. Shortly after Ukraine declared independence on December 1, 1991, the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers issued the decree on December 30, 1991 for the construction of the new subway in Donetsk. The first exploration work took place in 1992, construction work began that same year, with completion planned for 2002. In 1995 the city of Donetsk postponed the opening date to 2005 due to the poor financial situation. In 2000, work began on four of the six underground stations.

As a result, the financial situation deteriorated more and more, in June 2003 the construction workers went on strike , as no wages had been paid for seven months. By then, a total of 300 million hryvnia (around 48 million euros) had been spent on the construction of the Donetsk Metro. In some cases, the city also had to announce the end of the work on individual construction sites, two stations that were almost completely finished had to be preserved, the costs for this were considerable. In 2004, the Ukrainian Ministry of Economy, Transport and Finance pledged further funds for completion by 2010. It currently has the impression that the construction work has stopped.

The route of the first underground line of the city of Donetsk, the name Proletarsko-Kievskaya Linija will bear (Пролетарско-Киевская линия) should be 9.6 km long and have six stations whose names Proletarsjaka (Пролетарская), Tschumakowskaja ( Чумаковская), Krasny Gorodok (Красный городок), Mushketovskaya (Мушкетовская), Levobereschnaja (Левобережная) and Political Science institute ( Полититичесе . This will give the Budjonowski Rajon (Район Буденовский) a direct connection to the city center of Donetsk.

The future depot for the Donetsk Metro, which will be named Proletarskoye (Пролетарское), is located behind the Krasny Gorodok station . It is still unclear which trains will be used on the line; only the general data or the typical characteristics for ex-Soviet metros are known. These include, among other things, the track width of 1524 millimeters (Russian broad gauge ), the driving voltage of 825 volts and the power supply via the side busbar .

Scheme of the Donetsk metro planning

In the medium to long term, Donetsk, like other cities in the former Soviet Union, is to receive a subway system with three lines that form a secant network. Until then, the Proletarsko-Kiewskaja Linija , which will be given the red line color, should grow to 21 kilometers with 15 stations. In addition, there is to be a 25-kilometer blue line called Gornjazko-Makejewskaja Linija (Горняцко-Макеевская линия), and another green line called Petrovsko-Krasnogwardeiskaja Linija (Петровско-врася) should have at least 14 stations. In the end, the Donetsk subway network will be 70 kilometers long and have 46 stations. The names of the underground lines are generally based on the respective city districts (Rajons) in which the end stations of the respective underground line are located. The stretch of the red line, named Proletarsko-Kiewskaya Linija, leads from the Proletarski district to the Kiewski district.

Due to a lack of funds, it was decided in 2012 to finish the metro using the cut-and-cover method, the planned December 2014 deadline could not be met.
