Metropolitano SA was an Argentine rail transport company that operated three suburban rail networks in the greater Buenos Aires area between 1994 and 2007 . Due to the poor quality of the train service offered, the Argentine state withdrew the respective concessions from the company in 2004 and 2007.

history

In 1994 the two bus companies Olmos and Trainmet founded the consortium company Metropolitano, which then applied for the consortia of the then privatized state railway company Ferrocarriles Argentinos and ultimately won the bid for the Belgrano Sur , San Martín and Roca networks . Subsequently, a subsidiary was founded for each rail network to be operated, Transportes Metropolitano San Martín (TMS), Transportes Metropolitano Roca (TMR) and Transportes Metropolitano Belgrano Sur (TMB). On April 1, 1994, Metropolitano began operating on the Retiro - Pilar line (San Martín network), and the other two networks followed on May 1, 1994. In 1999 the entrepreneur Sergio Taselli bought the company.

Although the company received high subsidies from the Argentine state, poor performance, persistent delays and poor maintenance of the vehicle fleet were repeatedly reasons for numerous complaints from passengers and contractual penalties on the part of the state. As a result, in 2004, after numerous traffic accidents, some of them serious, the concession for the operation of the Retiro - Pilar (San Martín) line was canceled and handed over to the provisional state railway company UGOFE . After a violent demonstration by angry passengers at the Constitución train station on May 15, 2007, the Argentine state withdrew the concession for the two other suburban railway networks (Roca and Belgrano Sur) and also handed them over to the state railway company UGOFE.
