Mexican Hayride is a musical comedy with the music and lyrics by Cole Porter and a book by Herbert and Dorothy Fields . The play, produced by Michael Todd , premiered on January 28, 1944 at the Winter Garden Theater in New York . The cast included June Havoc and vaudeville star Bobby Clark .

Montana, a famous American bullfighter, is unlucky. During Amigo Americano Week, a bullfighting fiesta in Mexico City, her brother-in-law Joe Bascom shows up, an evil gangster boss who is not only wanted by his wife. In order not to jeopardize her reputation and her new relationship with the handsome US diplomat David Winthrop, she covers Bascom initially. He uses this help to continue his criminal machinations, with Montana's agent Lombo Campos also supporting him. The two of course fly up and the chase (and disguise) that now begins turns out to be a sightseeing tour around Mexico City ...
