Mi Fu米 芾 ( Mǐ Fú ), the old Mi (* 1051 in Jiangsu Province , † 1107 in Kaifeng ), also Mi Fei, was a famous Chinese painter.

He was a contemporary of the famous literary painter Su Dongpo , whom he rarely met personally. His son, the young Mi, was Mǐ Yǒurén (米 友仁).

Mi Fu developed a completely new style at the time, an ink technique reminiscent of western watercolors . The style was practiced so similarly by his son that one often simply speaks of the "two Mi" and a Mi style . Dǒng Yúan (~ 934 ~ 962) is given as a forerunner in the mustard seed garden .

anecdote

An anecdote tells of a meeting between the two. Mi Fu received Su Dongpo by having two tables set up in a large room with brushes, ink and three hundred sheets of paper each. Food and drinks were ready on a side table. When Su entered he sat down at one of the two tables without saying a word. Mi Fu followed his example. The servants could hardly keep up with rubbing the ink, the poems and calligraphies were written so quickly. When drinks and paper ran out at midnight, the two exchanged their works and said goodbye to each other.
