Nine techniques for painting foliage with dots

The painting Guide of the Mustard Seed Garden ( Chinese  芥子園畫傳  /  芥子园画传 , Pinyin Jièzǐyuán huàzhuàn / Jieziyuan huazhuan , W.-G. Chieh tzu yuan hua chuan ), also 芥子園畫譜  /  芥子园画谱 , Jièzǐyuán huàpǔ / Jieziyuan Huapu is a historical Chinese pattern book on the art of Chinese ink painting . The work is still an indispensable basic work for artists and students.

history

The work, first published in 1679 and compiled by Wang Gai ( 王 概 ) and Li Liufang ( 李 流芳 ), has been reprinted many times and later expanded from two to five volumes.

In addition to the people already mentioned, Zhu Sheng, Wang Zhi and others also worked on the work later.

The work is named after the mustard seed garden of Li Yu (1611–1680), a "mustard seed- sized" property in Nanjing with a bookstore and printer, where the work originally appeared.

The work stands in a row with such important painting manuals as the Meihua xishenpu ( 梅花 喜 神 譜 ) by Song Boren ( Nan Song ), Zhupu xianglu ( 竹 譜 詳 録 ) by Li Yan (Yuan), the Xuanhe huapu ( 宣 和 画谱 ) ( Bei Song ) and the Shizhuzhai shuhuapu ( 十 竹 斎 書画 譜 ) from Hu Zhengyan (Ming Dynasty).

English translations were provided by Mai-mai Sze . A two-volume, incomplete German translation was published in 1987. It has been set up for educational purposes.
