Sample book
The pattern book , also model book , is a genre of books as a collection of templates ( exemplum , "pattern"). It contains pictorial and sometimes also written instructions for reproduction .
The type
These are the collections of ornaments , symbols , images of objects, plants and animals that were used to depict things that were not known or to be able to repeat particularly successful pieces. Sample books were used for training and are among the most important textbooks, for example within the workshop sector . In addition, sample books are also used for coordination with clients and are to be seen as forerunners of the catalog . The Dutch tulip book, for example, should be seen in this context . Today the name can also be found for the color sample book .
The sample book is similar to the sketchbook , but is expressly intended for publication and had a certain normative character. Nevertheless, throughout history many sketchbooks, edited by the author or been issued as posthumous publisher in terms of a sample book (about the theory of proportion of Albrecht Dürer 1528), or pattern books under the less stringent named "sketchbook" appeared (such as the Architectural Sketchbook , a German architecture magazine 1852–1886).
Sample books are important today for the study of style . They fixed the stylistic peculiarities of a style epoch and are an important source for the self-perception of a historical epoch.
historical development
Early pattern books are accepted for Carolingian and Ottonian painting, the oldest preserved pattern book dates back to the 10th century. The Bauhüttenbuch des Villard de Honnecourt , dated around 1240, is the most important surviving copy from the Middle Ages, the Reiner Musterbuch also dates from the 13th century, or the influential Codex of Giovannino de Grassi (14th century). The so-called Göttingen pattern book from the middle of the 15th century, which apparently served as a template for illuminating a number of copies of the Gutenberg Bible , is well preserved.
The tradition of templates persists into the twentieth century ( Art Deco ), for example with templates for painting and art print , calligraphic initials , sewing , embroidery , knitting , fretwork, from model making to building joinery and countless other decorative elements in arts and crafts . Pattern books are common in many cultures, such as the mustard seed garden , a pattern book of ink painting by Wang Gai and Li Liufang from the 17th century.
