Influenced by attending the Darmstadt Summer Course for New Music , she became interested in composing with spectra , initially in the spectra of spoken language; then for selected spectra that can be derived from the intervals . These are used chordally and as modes . She refers quarter tones and timbre a varied tones in the composition. Her interest in questions of feminism permeates her work as well as questions of aesthetics or psychology.

Opera takes up an important part of her compositional work with the operatic trilogy "Todesarten" based on novels and fragments by Ingeborg Bachmann . “Requiem for Fanny Goldmann” and “Der Fall Franza” were performed in Graz. Mia Schmidt has also composed for amateurs time and again, and two works for musical theater were also created for children, “The Enchanted Magician” and “Pezzettino”, a story in music. Children can participate in both works.

In addition to music theater, her oeuvre includes chamber music, orchestral music, electronic works, sound installations and film music.
