Michael Baumann (General)

Michael Baumann (* 1956 in Lauterecken ) is a brigadier general of the army who has been with the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) since 1986 and has been its vice-president for central tasks and modernization since January 2019 .

Military career

Baumann joined the Bundeswehr in 1974 and completed officer training . From 1975 to 1978 he studied at the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich . Employment within the armed forces followed, most recently as a company commander .

Career in the BND

Baumann joined the BND in 1986. In 1995 he became the service's press spokesman , gave up his previously used service name "Peter Juchatz" and published the service's first ever press release . In 1999 he took over the management of a residency and in 2003 took over the management of a department . In 2008 he became head of the LB department and in 2014, with the rank of brigadier general, head of residency in Washington, DC Since January 2019, he has been Vice President of the BND and successor to Guido Müller , who switched to the Bundesbank in November 2018 . He also performs the tasks of the household officer and should be responsible for the self-security of the service and the staff.

Private

Baumann is married and has one child.
