Michael Baumann (born December 2, 1962 in Westerstede ) is a German human medicine specialist with a focus on radiation oncology . Since 2016 he has been Scientific Director and CEO of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg. In addition, he is the spokesman for the German Cancer Consortium DKTK and co-chair of the strategy group of the National Decade Against Cancer.

His main research areas are translational radiation oncology and radiation biology as well as the treatment of intrathoracic and head and neck tumors. He researches individualized radiation therapy, in which the radiation can be adapted for the respective patient by determining radiation-specific biomarkers.

Life

After studying medicine at the University of Hamburg , Michael Baumann received his doctorate in medicine at the Institute for Radiobiology in 1988. He then worked as a postdoc at Massachusetts General Hospital at Harvard Medical School in Boston. After completing his training as a specialist in radiation therapy, he completed his habilitation in 1994 at the University of Hamburg. In 1995 he first moved to the Medical Faculty Carl Gustav Carus at the TU Dresden as head of experimental radiation oncology . Michael Baumann has been Professor of Radiation Oncology at the Technical University of Dresden since 2001. During his time as Director of the Clinic for Radiation Therapy and Radiation Oncology at the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital and as Director of the Institute for Radiation Oncology at the Helmholtz Center Dresden-Rossendorf and the OncoRay Center, he played a key role in establishing radio-oncological research at the Dresden site. He was also the founding director of the University Cancer Center Dresden and spokesman for the Dresden site of the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) . In 2004 Michael Baumann was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . He was President of the European Society for Radiation Oncology (ESTRO), the European Cancer Society (ECCO) and the German Society for Radiation Oncology (DEGRO).

Baumann published more than 350 scientific articles in specialist journals. He is editor-in-chief of the leading international specialist journal for radiation oncology, radiotherapy & oncology .
