Michael Cashman, Baron Cashman CBE (born December 17, 1950 in London ) is a British actor and politician.

Life

After graduating from school, Cashman decided to become an actor. As an actor, he is best known for his role as "Colin Russell" on the BBC television series EastEnders . It was the first time that a gay man kissed another man on British television. Cashman also played the role of "Mike Wallace" on the British television program The Sandbaggers . He also appeared as an actor in the Doctor Who story Time Flight .

From 1999 to 2014 he was a member of the European Parliament for the Labor Party .

Cashman is an openly gay and was in a registered partnership with Paul Cottingham. Cashman lived with Cottingham for over twenty years until his death in 2014. The marriage took place on March 11, 2006. Cashman is involved in the National Secular Society and The Food Chain , a London-based association that supports HIV- positive people. Cashman was one of the co-founders of the British LGBT organization Stonewall (UK) .

EU parliamentarians

Cashman chairs the Conference of Delegation Chairs and the Delegation for relations with South Africa . He is a member of the Development Committee and the Petitions Committee . Cashman is deputy in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and in the delegation to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly .

House of Lords

On September 23, 2014 Michael Cashman received a Life Peerage with the title Baron Cashman , of Limehouse in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets , and thus became a member of the House of Lords for the Labor Party .

In 2007 Cashman received an honorary doctorate from the University of Staffordshire for his commitment to human rights issues .
