Michael Evan Head

Michael Evan Leiter (* 1969 ) is an American anti-terror and cybersecurity expert. He was director of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) from 2007 to 2011 .

Head grew up in Englewood , New Jersey and studied at Columbia University . From 1991 to 1997 he served as a Naval Flight Officer in the US Navy, including in Yugoslavia and Iraq. He then completed a law degree at Harvard University .

After graduation, Leiter worked for various federal agencies in the judicial service before joining the Iraq Intelligence Commission investigating the failures of the intelligence services regarding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and the office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), whose office was held by John Negroponte .

In November 2007, Head was appointed director of the United States National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) by President George W. Bush . He stayed in office even after Barack Obama took office. His administration of office was criticized after the NCTC failed to thwart the ultimately failed attack on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 in advance, although the perpetrator, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was known to the security authorities as an extremist. On July 8, 2011, Leiter resigned from his position, in which he was succeeded by Matthew G. Olsen .

After leaving the NCTC, he works as a consultant for the company Palantir Technologies , which develops data analysis software and uses security agencies such as the American secret service CIA ., In addition, he is a speaker, commentator and expert on anti-terrorism and cybersecurity for the television station NBC News active.
