Michael Elmentaler (born February 22, 1965 in Duisburg ) is a German specialist in German .

Michael Elmentaler studied German, philosophy and political science (Magister) at the University of Duisburg-Essen from 1984 to 1989 . From 1989 to 2003 he worked as a research assistant and research assistant in the field of German studies at the University of Duisburg. In 1994 he received his doctorate in Duisburg-Essen with the thesis Logical-semantic studies in grammar of the early 19th century. Since 2006 Elmentaler has been teaching as a professor for German linguistics with a focus on Low German language and literature at the University of Kiel .

His research focuses on Low German linguistics, dialectology and substandard research, historical graphematics (writing language research), and the historiography of linguistics.
