Simon Heinrich Adolf Herling

Simon Heinrich Adolf Herling (born October 13, 1780 in Detmold ; † April 1, 1849 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German philologist and grammarian .

Life

Herling was the son of a merchant . He first attended the Detmold high school Leopoldinum and in 1801 went to the University of Göttingen . There he devoted himself mainly to the study of theology . After completing his studies in 1804, he accepted a position as an educator in the house of the Frankfurt banking family Heyder. Only five years later, in 1805, did he get a job at the Frankfurt grammar school . Two years later, in 1811, he also received a reputation as a full professor of ancient languages to the newly founded University Lyceum Carolinum in Frankfurt. This went under with the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt in 1814. In addition to the ancient languages, he also taught religion, mathematics and physics as well as the German language.

For the 300th anniversary of the Reformation , Herling was one of the co-founders of the Frankfurt Scholars' Association for the German Language . He later became its president. In addition to his work as a teacher, Herling was also active as a writer. In addition to essays and monographic treatises, he also published widely acclaimed textbooks. Herling is considered to be the founder of a grammatical theory of the compound sentence. He also provided approaches for describing the logical-semantic structures in the area of ​​syntax and for more precise definition of form and content.
