Michael Gudo (born May 15, 1969 in Leverkusen ) is a geologist and palaeontologist from the Frankfurt school of evolution .

Life

Gudo studied geology / palaeontology and biology with a focus on zoology and evolutionary biology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . After receiving his diploma in geology in 1996, he did his doctorate in 1999 at the Geological-Paleontological Institute of the Goethe University under Klaus-Peter Vogel and Wolfgang Friedrich Gutmann (title: Construction, evolution and reef-forming potential of rugose corals ). In 2009 he completed his habilitation in geology and palaeontology at the Georg-August University in Göttingen with the text Das Evolutionsfeld der Deuterostomier .

1999–2005 Gudo worked as a research assistant at the Senckenberg Research Institute and Nature Museum , where he worked on the further development of the Frankfurt evolution theory and the method of construction morphology . The responsibilities at the museum included the laboratory for histology and the collections for histology and comparative anatomy . In 2005, Gudo and his working group founded the first spin-off of the Senckenberg Research Institute: Morphisto Evolutionsforschung und Verwaltung GmbH, which offers a comprehensive service in scientific services and special products for routine use in medical and biological laboratories at the interface between science and business.

Research priorities

Influenced by his work in the field of evolutionary biology and construction morphology, Gudo has dealt with evolutionary biology and the methods of evolutionary research in research and teaching . The focus of the research work is on: the areas of application of evolution theories , methods of histology and phylogenetic reconstruction, the body construction and evolution of echinoderms , chordates and vertebrates and - within the new mouths - the tunicates and gill animals . Together with Manfred Grasshoff, Gudo worked intensively on the body structure and tribal history of the coelenterates (especially the hard corals and extinct rugose corals ) and presented new findings on the gallertoid model for the origin of multicellular animals . Following work on the coelenterates, Gudo devoted himself to the evolutionary field of the deuterostomians. Construction morphological, anatomical and histological work on echinoderms, enteropnews and chorus data formed the basis and main content of a multi-year DFG-funded research project. Current research focuses on the theory of evolution with regard to conditions, mechanisms and factors of evolution. Gudo's contributions to the Frankfurt theory of evolution are primarily to be seen in a more precise definition of the scope and the application of this reconstruction method to different animal phyla.

Teaching and current activities

Gudo has been treasurer on the board of the Paleontological Society since 2003 and managing director of Morphisto Evolution Research and Application GmbH, a spin-off of the Senckenberg Research Institute, since 2005. At the same time, he is teaching at the Faculties of Biology , Geosciences and Geography at the Goethe University in Frankfurt and in the Geosciences and Geography Department at the University of Göttingen. Teaching focuses on evolution , the theory of evolution, the origin of the earth and life, the spread of the Metazoa and special courses on histology, comparative anatomy and construction morphology.
