Michael Hermanussen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Hermanussen (born April 26, 1955 in Hamburg ) is a German pediatrician and has been a professor of medicine at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel since 2004 . He has mainly published papers on growth research and nutrition .

Life

Hermanussen studied medicine and worked from 1982 to 1989 as a pediatrician at the University Children's Hospital in Kiel. He studies the growth and development of children ( auxology ) and for the first time described miniature growth spurts . Since 1990 he has established and operates joint research with scientists at home and abroad. He teaches as part of the faculty at Kiel University. Since 1992 he has organized national and international conferences on growth and nutrition. From 2003 to 2011 he was on the board of the Society for Anthropology and co-editor of the Anthropological Gazette. He is the founder and chairman of the German Society for Auxology.

Research areas

Hermanussen developed new mathematical methods for the improved diagnosis of growth disorders and a new computing technique for determining the later adult height of a child . He introduced mini- knemometry , a new precision technique for measuring children's growth. This procedure determines the lower leg length so precisely that growth can be measured within a few days. He also developed a comparable technique for measuring rats , in which growth is visible within hours. These studies were important in understanding the effects of growth hormone . His research led to a significant improvement in the previous treatment with growth hormone . Hermanussen showed for the first time that anorexic children not only do not grow, but can even shrink in length.

Since 2002 he has been concerned with nutrition and obesity , in particular with the effect of glutamate on the regulation of satiety . In this context, Hermanussen demonstrated for the first time that German convenience food products contain neurotransmitters .
