Michael J. Colacurcio
Michael Joseph Colacurcio, Jr. (born July 2, 1936 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) is an American literary scholar.
He studied at the Xavier University of Cincinnati (BA 1958; MA 1959) and the University of Illinois (Ph.D. 1963). From 1963 to 1968 and from 1969 to 1976 he taught English literature at Cornell University , from 1968 to 1969 intermittently at Ohio State University and from 1977 first at the University of California in Irvine , then at the University of California, Los Angeles ( UCLA), with whom he is still associated as a Distinguished Professor .
His main interest is in American colonial and romantic literature; His numerous works on Nathaniel Hawthorne's work have proven to be particularly influential , which Colacurcio, contrary to symbolist or psychological interpretations, understands primarily as historical literature , i.e. as a commentary on the history of New England that is closely related to place and time.
He has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2007 .
