Athletic career

19-year-old Michael Jakob played his first games in the GDR league in the 1965/66 season. After he had played a game for the football section of SC Dynamo Berlin, he moved with the league team in January 1966 to the newly founded BFC Dynamo. By the end of the season he was used by the BFC in another nine league matches. In the following seasons Jakob did not get beyond the status of a substitute player. When the BFC had to relegate from the league in 1967, Jakob had only played six games in the league. Even in the GDR league season he played only six point games and was only marginally involved in the immediate resurgence of the Berliners. Mainly he played with the second team in the third class district league , with which he was able to celebrate promotion to the GDR league. The 1968/69 season began Jakob initially with the second BFC team in the GDR league. After he had scored seven goals in six appearances there, he was used in the tenth league game of the first team again in the league. He then played another fifteen league games and scored three goals, mainly as a left winger. Despite this successful record, Jakob was dismissed from the BFC after the season and handed over to its FSG Dynamo Frankfurt branch . The FSG played two seasons with Jakob in the district league, until 1971 they were promoted to the GDR league. As a result, the FSG Dynamo was transferred to Fürstenwalde / Spree and started there under the name SG Dynamo Fürstenwalde. In the following two seasons Jakob played 32 of the 44 GDR league games for SG Dynamo and in 1973 was the top scorer in the syndicate with fourteen goals. He then moved within the GDR league to 1. FC Union Berlin , who had previously been relegated from the league. With 19 of 22 league appearances and as the top scorer again with 14 goals, Jakob helped the Unionern win the season. Although he was used in the promotion round in six of the eight qualifying games and had scored the most goals for the Berliners with four goals, Union missed the return to the league in third. 1974/75 Jabob could only play thirteen of the 22 league games. Union reached the promotion round again, in which Jakob completed four of the eight promotion games, but this time only came in last place. Then Jakob left 1. FC Union and joined the East Berlin GDR league club EAB Lichtenberg 47 . In his first Lichtenberger season 1975/76 he was used in all 22 point games and scored thirteen goals, with which he was the top scorer of a team for the third time. Jakob played his last season in the GDR league as a 30-year-old in 1976/77. He was used again in fifteen point games and this time came only to one goal. Since Lichtenberg was relegated from the GDR league after the season, Jakob did not return to higher-class football. In twelve seasons between 1965 and 1977 he had played 32 league games with six goals and 113 GDR league games with 62 goals.
