Michael Jon Neubert

Sir Michael Jon Neubert (born September 3, 1933 in Blackheath , London , † January 3, 2014 in Cheltenham ) was a British politician of the Conservative Party . He was a Member of the British House of Commons for Romford from 1974 to 1997 .

Life

Neubert attended Bromley Grammar School, the Royal College of Music and Downing College at Cambridge, where he studied modern and medieval languages. He then worked as a consultant in tourism and industry. Between 1960 and 1974 he was councilor and alderman in the London borough of Bromley , and had a short time also chairs the City Council. He was also mayor of the city in 1972/73.

In 1966 he ran as a MP for Hammersmith North and 1970 for Romford, but was defeated. In February 1974 he was elected a member of parliament. From 1983 he was Whip and several times Parliamentary Private Secretary , 1989/90 he was Undersecretary for Procurement in the Ministry of Defense . When Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher restructured and rejuvenated her cabinet in 1990, Neubert had to resign. In 1997 he lost his seat in parliament to Labor politician Eileen Gordon .

In April 1990 he visited Gruinard Island , which had been tried in the Second World War through experiments with anthrax, and declared the island habitable after decontamination work.

Neubert had been married to Sally Binger since 1959. The couple had a son.
