J. Michael Luttig

J. Michael Luttig (born June 13, 1954 in Tyler , Texas ) is an American lawyer and former federal judge at the federal appeals court for the 4th district . After the withdrawal of the nomination of Harriet Miers , he was next to Samuel Alito , who was eventually nominated, as one of the favorites to succeed Sandra Day O'Connor at the Supreme Court .

Luttig graduated from Washington and Lee University and the University of Virginia School of Law legal . He then briefly worked in the White House and then served as a clerk at the Supreme Court for Antonin Scalia and Warren Burger . From 1985 to 1989 he worked as a lawyer and then held various positions in the Ministry of Justice . In 1991 US President George HW Bush appointed him judge at the Federal Court of Appeals for the 4th district.

In May 2006, Luttig resigned from his position as appellate judge and has since worked as Senior Vice President and chief lawyer (general counsel) for the airline Boeing .
